It’s the timeless tale that God spun long before the world began.
Long before J.K. Rowling, J.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis (wow, can we talk about all those initials?) even learned to read, and certainly before they crafted their first sentences, God was writing.
Writing a story that would become the fountain of all other stories.
The captivating, compelling, heart-wrenching and beautiful story.
The story of good and evil.
Ever since I learned to read I’ve loved reading fairy tales.
Between the pages of a fairy tale book are stories of triumph, excellence and virtue. Of princesses and brave knights, daring conquests and the fight for what is true and right. Of true love and purity, courage and morals, and don’t forget victory over malicious enemies.
Of course, there are books and movies not classified as “fairy tales” which contain some of the same material. You may be thinking of your favorite stories now. They can truly grip our hearts.
Why do you think that is?
Because they speak to us of the overarching story of life. The story God developed before the foundation of the world. You see, before stars were breathed into the night sky, before sin seeped into every facet of the world, before swords and armor were invented, God had a plan.
A plan of redemption. A plan to permanently and finally conquer evil.
In a land of despair and on the brink of total destruction, Jesus, the true humble hero, breaks on the scene to ransom for Himself not just a damsel but a world in distress and through that heart-changing rescue, invites us to join Him.
To join Him in an epic saga that puts every earthly version to shame.
That’s the thing about fairy tales. We were created to live them not just watch them.
Men, the adventure, respect and honor you long for is found in picking up your sword and following the great Champion of the world into battle. A battle already won but still in need of brave fighters.
Ladies, the love, hope and acceptance your heart so desperately desires is found in the greatest romance of all time. The romance of a sinless Savior who paid your debt in order to make you His spotless bride.
So let us not be content to simply read or watch stories of good vs. evil, but let’s join the greater story.
Let’s go slay dragons and fight the enemy.
Let’s live for the King and work with Him to bring restoration, hope and glory to His creation and kingdom.
And let’s worship the One who imagined and carried out the most astonishing and brilliant story of all time.
Since it is so likely they will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. -C.S. Lewis on youth
Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten. -G.K. Chesterton
