Wisdom, Banana Splits, and My Cute Parents

IMG_6632_1024.jpg

We enjoyed 1991 with big smiles and noteworthy bangs.

Teachable moments.
Character building exercises.
Family meetings and studying Proverbs.
Heart-to-hearts over big bowls of cereal.
Constant heart checks and hard questions.
Laughter, tears, discipline, and mercy.
Dinner conversation and studying Philippians.
More love and grace than I could deserve in 10,000 lifetimes.

That’s what my childhood was made of.

How do you make non-cheesy Christian art?

how do you make non-cheesy christian art.jpg

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love Andrew Peterson’s heart and ministry.

The magazine I write for featured AP in the latest edition but the following snippet had to be (regrettably) trimmed, so here it is for your enjoyment and edification. It’s so good. Praise the Lord for His grace to us through Gospel-centered artists like Andrew Peterson.

Beholding the Lamb and Interviewing Andrew Peterson

beholding the lamb and interviewing andrew peterson.jpg

“No man, when he comes to die, will ever say, ‘I spoke too much of the grace of God.’ Let Satan accuse me of that. I welcome it.” -Andrew Peterson, foreword, Behold the Lamb of God

I’m just so thankful for Andrew Peterson’s life and ministry.

It was February when we set down with Andrew Peterson in Franklin, Tenn., to interview him for the cover story of the current RTM Magazine. My vocabulary is too weak to string together a sentence that would fully convey how much I learned from him that day.

We laughed, we (I) cried, we talked about how much we love the Gospel.

It was my favorite interview.

Happy Birthday C. S. Lewis! 12 Quotes from The Weight of Glory

happy birthday cs lewis.jpg

C. S. Lewis is one of my favorite humans and today would have been his 118th birthday.

My small group girls will come over tonight and we’ll have a birthday party for him and watch David Payne’s An Evening with C. S. Lewis (we won’t watch the exact one linked but it is so good and well worth the time to watch a YouTube video with “antique” graphics) while drinking tea and celebrating the work of God in his life and legacy. Until then, here’s a little blurb I wrote about “Jack” for the November/December RTM Magazine, along with 12 quotes from his famous sermon The Weight of Glory.

We hope it propels you to worship the One who conquered hell for your redemption.

I love this edition and we hope it encourages and strengthens you!

I love that this is my job and I would love to hear what you think about this mag, so check it out for yourself and let me know your thoughts!

(And did I mention it’s interactive and free? It is.)

What does it mean to “live on mission”?

what does it mean to live on mission.jpg

It’s common jargon in Christian circles right now but what does it really mean to “live on mission”?

In the March/April RTM Magazine, readers will have access to articles and resources that discuss discipleship, define life on mission, and detail the believer’s purpose in this world.

Please consider reading the new issue. I fully believe in this magazine and what God can do with it—it is a free resource packed with Gospel-saturated articles, reviews/recommendations, profile stories and wisdom. Just assembling this issue and praying over each article has been such a help to my heart and a refocusing on the real mission we’ve been assigned.

Soli Deo Gloria.

When Fears Come True: The Corrie ten Boom Story

when fears come true.jpgravensbruck prisoners.jpg

Corrie ten Boom was no stranger to fear.

When World War II broke out and the German Blitzkrieg’s “Nazification” of the Dutch people escalated in May 1940, the ten Boom family home in Haarlem, Amsterdam, became a refuge for many. Jews, members of the Dutch underground resistance movement, students, and intellectuals alike were warmly welcomed into the home above the ten Boom watch shop, where they were treated as part of the family and given food, the Word of God, and a community unified by the desire for freedom.

Before long, the safe house was slightly remodeled and a secret room was built into Corrie’s upstairs bedroom to harbor refugees when the Gestapo would illegally and forcibly search homes.

When Fear Guards Your Heart Instead of God

thedayfearcame.jpg

God is an expert wall-destroyer, isn’t He?

I’m not just talking about Jericho or Jerusalem or when King Uzziah broke through the Philistines’ walls (Joshua 6:20, Isaiah 22:5, 2 Chronicles 26:6); I’m talking about the walls we build around our hearts.

Few cities are walled nowadays, but at times our hearts—the epicenter of our person—can be more fortified than Jericho ever was. God loves to break down those walls.

Over the last year God has kicked down a few heart-protecting bricks in my life, and in the process, revealed layers of fear and insecurities I didn’t know existed as they were pushed safely behind carefully constructed defensive barricades.

This unveiling has led to a lot of prayer, a lot of Scripture-searching, and a lot of questions. Why do I put up walls? Why these fears? Why fear at all? What is the root of this?

To answer those questions, we have to go back.

Monday Morning Munch No. 139 – Fighting Fears

ipad.jpg

Fear = an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

What is it about fears that so easily ensnares us?

The last six months have brought with it a significant amount of joy, a significant amount of challenges and a significant amount of exposure to pretty much every fear-related thing in my heart. There’s been lots of tearing down, lots of pruning and lots of learning to deal with fear.
